Minneapolis libraries need help

Filed under: psa — alecsothblog @ 9:38 pm

Tonight I was honored with a chair at the Minneapolis Public Library. Many thanks to the Willis and Sissel families (and mom and dad) for this tremendous honor.

During the ceremony a library representative noted that despite our reputation as one of the most literate cities in the country, our libraries have some of the worst hours of any major system in America. Since 2003, Minneapolis library funding has been cut by nearly three million dollars. For folks that are concerned about this growing problem, please visit The Friends of the Minneapolis Public Library.

  1. Just recently (on NPR I think) I hear someone talking about how in today’s political climate if the idea of a “Public Library” was proposed most people would see it as an example of out of control government spending.

  2. Congratulations on your new chair position!

I completely agree with the representative that mentioned our library system’s terrible hours. It is such a shameful waste to have such nice facilities–most especially that beautiful new library on Hennepin–but to not have them open.

Thank you for the pointer to The Friends of the Minneapolis Public Library!
